Entries open April 1 on nebgolf.org
OMAHA (March 30, 2020) – The Nebraska Golf Association and the Nebraska Women’s Amateur Golf Association will continue their partnership in 2020 to co-present the state’s two premier women’s championships, and entries open April 1.
The organizations have partnered the last two years to co-present the Nebraska Women’s Amateur Championship and the Nebraska Women’s Match Play Championship, in an effort to uphold the traditions of these championships and grow participation. The NGA will again contribute its resources to conduct the events at the same level as its 10 other state championships.
The Nebraska Women’s Amateur Championship is a stroke play event that began in 1975 under the name of Women’s State Medal Golf Tournament. Omaha’s Susan Marchese owns the record books of the championship, winning an incredible 11 titles. This year, the 46th Nebraska Women’s Amateur Championship will be conducted at a historic venue, The Country Club of Lincoln, June 1-3. The club hosted it’s 12th Nebraska Amateur Championship last year, and will host the Women’s Amateur Championship for the third time in 2020. Grand Island’s JC Stevenson won the title the last time in 2009. The club first hosted in 1978 when Omaha’s Nanette Circo won her first of back-to-back titles.
The Championship Division will play 54 holes, while the Non-Championship Division plays 36 holes, beginning June 2. Entries open April 1 at 8 a.m. CDT, and close on May 26 at 5 p.m. CDT.
The 97th Nebraska Women’s Match Play Championship will be conducted at Kearney Country Club on July 20-22. Kearney Country Club also last hosted in 2009, when Papillion’s Kayla Knopik (Barnes) won. The Nebraska Women’s Match Play Championship features an 18-hole Stroke Play Qualifier followed by a cut to the low 16 players for the Championship Match Play Bracket. This was the first women’s championship in Nebraska, and is the second oldest state championship to the Nebraska Amateur, which started in 1905. The inaugural championship was conducted in 1916 at The Field Club of Omaha, and Lincoln’s Louise Pound won the title. Marchese also holds the most Match Play titles, winning eight, the first in 1982 and the last in 2010.
The Women’s Match Play features three divisions of play, Championship, Senior Gross and Net. Entries open April 1 at 8 a.m. CDT and close on July 13 at 5 p.m. CDT.
